Rhodes is a mesmeric collage of deep blue skies, crystal clear seas and historic beauty. It has more hours of sun than any other Greek island and some wonderful beaches to while them away on. Inland olive groves and mountains are home to enchanting villages and ancient ruins.

Wherever you go on Rhodes you won't be too far from its wonderful beaches, whether they be tiny coves, the slightly more exposed and rocky beaches of the west coast, or long stretches of golden sands, perfect for relaxing and soaking up the sun. Lindos reaches the hottest temperatures on the island and is much favoured by sun-worshippers. For the more energetic, there are a variety of watersports Trianda and Ixia, are excellent for windsurfing and Kalithea is renowned for its underwater treasures and snorkelling opportunities.

Rhodes Town is the best place to shop with an array of shops selling everything from the latest fashions to local produce. Look out for leather goods, especially sandals, hand-painted ceramics, rugs and exquisite gold and silver jewellery.

Faliraki is the party capital of the island though Rhodes Town runs it close in terms of vibrancy but with a splash of sophistication. Resorts such as Lindos and Ixia are more geared to those who prefer their nights a little quieter while Kalithea is for those who really want to unwind.

Rhodes' coast is a dream for beach lovers. Lindos is not only a fine beach resort, the hottest on the island, but also possesses an Acropolis perched on top of a 116m rock. Further down the east coast Rhodes becomes a wilder island where you can find secluded spots to enhance your tan. Rhodes cultural heritage is equally inspiring. Rhodes Town has a fine pedigree; planned in 408BC by Hippodamos its old town is now a mish-mash of Byzantine, Turkish and Latin architecture and has been designated as a World Heritage site. If you head west you'll come across the extensive ruins of Doric City. Exploring deeper inland will take you to some fabulous mountain scenery. One of the best trips is across the northern highlands to Mt Profitis Ilias and Salakos.
