Holiday information on Paphos, Cyprus
The former ancient capital of Cyprus, Paphos successfully blends ancient and modern.
Paphos is steeped in history and there is plenty to discover and explore. For example: the mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion; the mysterious vaults and caves of the Tombs of Kings; the pillar to which St Paul was alleged to have been tied to and whipped; and a couple of interesting museums. Or take to the sea, and go on a scenic boat trip to Coral Bay with its incredible beach.
Paphos combines ancient history with a cosmopolitan, modern tourist resort. The area by the coast is known as Kato Paphos and boasts a pretty little harbour and plenty of open-air cafés and bars. Further inland, is the old town of Paphos, known by the locals as Ktima. With its narrow streets, hustle and bustle, covered market and typically Cypriot atmosphere, it is well worth a visit. As a consequence, Paphos is on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage list. It attracts a mix of clientele, but is especially popular with families and culture vultures!
There are four pebble and sand beaches east of town along the rocky shore which offer some watersports. The quieter, developing resort of Coral Bay is about 13km away. Its beach is the best in the area with a long stretch of golden sand, shallow waters and more watersports available.
The best bargains to be had are in traditional pottery, embroidery and silver. If you're after something a little more contemporary, you won't be disappointed either.
There's lots of live entertainment in the numerous bars, English pubs and a couple of discos and nightclubs. Look out for live bouzouki acts where performers play a traditional string instrument similar to a guitar.
There's everything from fast food to fresh fish. After dark the harbour side tavernas and restaurants of Kato Paphos are romantic and sociable.
