Istanbul is a fascinating mixture of old and new, and its architecture and sights are influenced by the three successive empires of which it was a former capital Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman. There are many museums, churches, palaces, mosques and bazaars giving you lots to see during your Istanbul short break. One of Istanbul 's most prominent landmarks is the Blue Mosque it is an impressive building with beautiful domes and semi domes, marble courtyards, fountains and six slender minarets. It was founded in 1609 when Sultan Ahmet I ordered the construction to begin and was completed in 1616. One of the finest buildings is the Basilica of St. Sophia, now called the Ayasofya Museum , which was built in the 6th century. It has a very large dome that rises 55 metres above the ground and has a diameter of 31 metres . Do not miss the Topkapi Palace home to all the Ottoman sultans for nearly four centuries, the Blue Mosque.
